Who Needs a Vehicle Safety System Inspection (VSSI)?

California law requires a VSSI before the DMV will re-register or retitle these vehicles. If any of these apply to you, call us today.

Salvage Title Vehicle

Insurance declared your vehicle a total loss and you bought it back, or you purchased a salvage-title vehicle. A VSSI is required before the DMV will register it.

Rebuilt / Reconstructed Vehicle

Your vehicle was repaired after being declared a total loss and needs to be certified safe before the DMV will issue a revived salvage title.

Insurance Buyback / Total Loss

Purchased a vehicle back from your insurance company after it was totaled? California requires a VSSI before registration can be processed.

Fix-It Ticket / Safety Violation

Received a brake or lighting citation from law enforcement? We are a licensed station that can verify the repair and sign off your fix-it ticket.

How to Prepare Your Vehicle for the VSSI

A little preparation before your inspection can save you time and money. These are the most common reasons vehicles fail — fix them before you come in.

  • 1

    Test All Your Lights

Walk around your car and check every light: headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights. Any burnt-out bulb is an automatic fail.

  • 2

    Listen to Your Brakes

Grinding, squealing, or a soft/spongy pedal are red flags. Have your brakes inspected before your VSSI if you suspect any issues.

  • 3

    Check Your Seat Belts

Pull every belt fully out, confirm it retracts smoothly, and confirm the latch clicks and holds. Check all seats.

  • 4

    Inspect Windshield & Wipers

Cracks in the driver's line of vision or streaking wiper blades can cause a failure. Test the washer fluid too.

  • 5

    Check for Open Recalls

The BAR-SIS system cross-checks your VIN against NHTSA recalls. Any unrepaired recall is an automatic fail. Check your VIN at NHTSA.gov before coming in.

  • 6

    Tires & Alignment

Check tire tread and pressure. Make sure the vehicle tracks straight — hard pulling indicates a suspension issue.
